Behold the rainbow eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta)! This large evergreen tree grows up to about 60 meters (197 feet) tall and is native to the dense, humid forests of New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Philippines. What gives it such a spectrum of color? When strips of its bark peel off, they change in color: bark starts out in shades of green, then transitions into purple, red, and orange as time goes on. Continuous peeling helps the tree keep its trunk clear of other plants. And having a vibrant range of colors is thought to help it absorb a wider range of light to aid in photosynthesis.
